Local Foods Intern
Specific Responsibilities:
The Local Foods Intern will assist DCCK as it increases its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and providing its clients with access to and education about nutritious food. About half of the intern’s time will be spent in the field – engaging with our volunteer gleaners, building partnerships with farms and learning first-hand about produce sources. The intern will spend the rest of his or her time working on research projects and curriculum development related to food, nutrition and sustainability.
* Assist DCCK staff in taking volunteer groups gleaning (or picking surplus crops) at local farms
* Develop educational material on local foods and nutrition for volunteers
* Help expand DCCK’s nutrition programming by writing and revising lessons on healthy eating. Help DCCK’s nutrition specialist teach these lessons to clients of all ages
* Do research and outreach to help expand DCCK’s nutrition classes to summer programs for local children
* Assist DCCK transportation team in picking up produce at local farms
* Other duties as needed
Qualifications Needed:
* Academic background in environmental studies or nutrition, and a strong
interest in pursuing further study or a career in one of these fields
* Volunteer management is a plus
* Research, writing and editing skills
* Microsoft Office skills
* Valid driver’s license

Outreach Intern
Specific Responsibilities:
Interns will be able to get direct service experience working in the
mornings with outreach workers serving breakfast and providing support
with clients.
They will use this time to develop relationships to then take the oral
history of clients’ interaction with the program. The object is to get a
full understanding of clients’ personal reflection on First Helping,
homelessness, poverty and their community for funding and education
surrounding community needs.
Qualifications Needed:
* Attention to detail
* Creativity
* Ability to multi-task and do self-directed work.
* Experience with Microsoft office is a big plus.
* The ability to jump into conversations with new people and establish
trust and relationships with communities often outside of your comfort
zone.

Fresh Start Catering Intern
Specific Responsibilities:
* Taking and routing of client leads, administrative tasks, filing,
answering client calls, site visits, on-site event co-ordination, possible
sales calls, research on potential clients as well as kitchen/culinary
aid.

* Strong business writing skills
* Ability to multi-task and do self-directed work.
* Experience with Microsoft office is a plus.
* Customer Service and event planning experience is a big plus.

Grant Writing Intern
Specific Responsibilities:
DCCK seeks an intern in our Development Department to assist with the
management of our fundraising efforts on a local level. Duties will
include:
* Help maintain grant calendar – Update deadlines, reports, status,
request amounts, etc.
* Research grant prospects – utilizing the Foundation Center and other
resources, work with the Development staff to determine needs and seek out
new prospects for funding
* Learn the language of DCCK – Working with the Development staff, you
will have the opportunity to both learn the current language used to
describe the kitchen’s work, and to help shape new phraseology.
* Grant Writing – Working with previous templates and your own fresh
ideas, work with the Development staff to write LOI’s (Letter of Inquiry),
Grant Proposals and reports.
* Collaborating on newsletters for DCCK (monthly) & CKP (quarterly)
Qualifications:
DC Central Kitchen’s approach to development focuses on building
relationships to recruit support. Our Development Department is a dynamic
team of individuals. We seek an intern who is self-motivated, possesses
excellent written and oral communication skills, and is interested in
being part of an innovative nonprofit organization. Additional
qualifications include:

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access is a plus.

Culinary Job Training Intern (Summer 2009)
General Description:
Assist Graduate Support Coordinator in tracking and updating information
about alumni who graduated in the past 3 years. Develop creative
strategies for presenting the information
Specific Responsibilities:
* Review client files and extract information for entry into the alumni
database
* Contact graduates by phone and email to update information charting
personal and professional achievements since graduating from DCCK’s
program
* Create charts graphs and other presentations of the graduate data to be
used by DCCK in improving programs, fundraising, statistical reporting and
community education
* Plan the August graduate support event, the First Annual Alumni
Cook-off, with the CJT Team
* Attend monthly Alumni Leadership Council Meetings
Qualifications Needed:
* Attention to detail
* Creativity
* Strong business writing skills
* Ability to multi-task and do self-directed work.
* Strong experience with Microsoft Excel office is a big plus.
* Proficient in statistical analysis preferred
* Commitment to social justice issues especially worker’s rights and
re-entry rights

Development/Communications Intern (Summer 2009)
General Description:
DC Central Kitchen’s development team seeks the much needed support and
energy of an intern, who will assist with the implementation of our
communication strategy. This internship will consist of writing, editing,
designing, and donor relations responsibilities.
Specific Responsibilies:
* Collaborate on newsletters for DCCK (monthly) & CKP (quarterly)
* Edit written, electronic, and video communication
* Monitor and expand social networks of both DCCK and CKP
(Facebook, MySpace, Blogs)
* Photograph DC Central Kitchen events, such as volunteer events,
graduations, cook-offs, etc.
* Write news updates for CKP and DCCK website, complete with
corresponding photographs
* Provide innovative ideas regarding the addition of new
media/design to the DCCK and CKP website
* Maintain communication with donors through thank you letters
and event planning
* Design print materials, such as invitations, flyers, postcards,
appeal letters
* Participate in weekly planning & update meetings with
Development Department
Qualifications Needed:
This intern must have excellent communication skills and knowledge of
internet-based communication tools. Additional qualifications include:
* Interest in social issues such as hunger, homelessness, and
sustainable community development
* Experience with the following applications (helpful but not
required): XHTML, CSS, PHP, WordPress, Video editing, InDesign, PhotoShop,
Dreamweaver
* Strong copy writing skills
* Attention to detail
* Ability to do self-directed work
* Creativity in writing, graphic design
