Stride Rite Fellowship and Scholarship

“Stride Rite had a significant impact on my professional choices. Arriving at Harvard, I saw my need to work a part-time job and my desire to perform community service as incongruous. The Stride Rite Community Service program gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion for community service - cementing in my mind my life’s desire to serve others - while making the money I needed to put myself through college.”
-Robert Giannino-Racine ‘94

The Stride Rite Community Service Program was established in 1983 by the Stride Rite Foundation. The goal of the program is to support students of diverse economic and social backgrounds as they become leaders in their communities, both as undergraduates and beyond. To do this, the program provides reflection and skill development opportunities, mentorship an financial assistance.

There are three main components of the program, the Undergraduate Scholars Program, Postgraduate Fellowships, and Senior Recognition Awards. Please scroll down for details.

Undergraduate Scholars Program

Scholarships are awarded to low-income, undergraduate students to support a consistent, year-round commitment to service. Scholars join a community of 35-40 undergraduates dedicated to service and social justice. The group engages in reflection and shared learning, guided by Stride Rite Program staff. In addition, Scholars receive financial support and one-on-one mentorship. Any rising sophomore, junior or senior who is Federal Work Study Eligible, or who is from a low-income background is welcome to apply.

Postgraduate Fellowship

The Stride Rite Postgraduate Fellowship is intended for a Harvard senior devoted to service as an undergraduate and who demonstrates a future lifetime commitment to service. The spirit of the award is to provide fellows with the opportunity to put their vision for social change into action.

The fellow is awarded up to $25,000. The grant money is intended to support the fellow’s living expenses as he or she works on a public interest project in the year following graduation. The money may not be used for project expenses, but the fellow is encouraged to seek other project funding if applicable.

Applications for the Class of 2010 due:
5:00 PM, Friday, March 5th, 2010

Note: All applicants must attend an advising session with Stride Rite Fellowship Administrators. The session will provide further information about the fellowship and help applicants to write effective proposals.
