Story #52: Laurie Chroney, Centering Restorative Justice and Love

This month marks an anniversary for Laurie, a Director of Programs (DoP) at PBHA, as she celebrates seven years with the organization. Since joining in 2017, Laurie has witnessed incredible growth, particularly in the area of restorative justice. Initially, only a couple of programs, like FIO and NAYEP, were piloting these initiatives. Now, she’s proud to see restorative practices woven throughout all programs, reflecting PBHA's commitment to continual improvement and setting strategic goals.

Laurie finds great joy in watching students develop and thrive.

“I love seeing students grow and being part of that process…It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness their development and the positive changes they make in their lives.” - Laurie Chroney on finding joy in student development.

One of her most cherished memories occurred during the summer of 2022. A mother approached her to express gratitude for the transformation she saw in her daughter, a direct result of the supportive environment PBHA fosters. “My daughter is able to grow and express herself, and I’m learning from her because of that,” the mother said. This heartfelt moment resonated deeply with Laurie and aligned perfectly with her personal goal of helping students advocate for themselves.

Throughout her work, Laurie has learned invaluable lessons, particularly about the importance of individualized support.

“I realized that each student needs something different,” she explains. Initially, she approached coaching student leaders with a one-size-fits-all mentality, but soon understood the necessity of adapting her approach to meet the unique needs of each individual. She also emphasizes that it’s crucial to support students not just in their service work, but in their personal challenges as well.

For students preparing to volunteer in unfamiliar communities, Laurie offers this advice:

“Show up. Get to know the community and your stakeholders. Understand their needs so you can bring valuable resources to the table. Don’t make assumptions about what they need—let them teach you.” - Laurie Chroney on having humility in serving others.

To conclude, here is one of Laurie’s favorite quotes:

"When I dare to be powerful to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." -Audre Lorde
