Stephen Pierre’s connection with PBHA began in 2014 and has since shaped his career and personal growth in profound ways. Reflecting on his journey, Stephen shared insights that highlight the impact of his time at PBHA.

“My first summer with PBHA was in 2014 as a Junior Counselor. As a high schooler who had never worked with kids before, I needed a job and was open to new experiences. It turned out to be the best decision I've ever made.”

This decision to work with the Roxbury Youth Initiative (RYI) marked the beginning of a transformative experience. Stephen returned to PBHA as a Senior Counselor during his undergraduate years at Bridgewater State University and later took on the role of Director, serving in various capacities until 2018.

“After my last summer at PBHA, I knew I wanted to stay in education... The experience I gained at PBHA was invaluable, providing me with early insights that many teachers don't get before entering the classroom.”

His journey into teaching was swift and successful. In his first year, he was recognized for his classroom management skills and promoted to lead teacher within a month, demonstrating the effectiveness of the skills he honed at PBHA.

One of the most impactful aspects of Stephen’s experience was the sense of community at his camp, RYI.

“I will never forget how welcoming and warm my Senior Counselors and Directors were, making me feel like I belonged and was capable of succeeding.”

This nurturing environment fostered a lasting sense of belonging.

“The sense of belonging and support I experienced at PBHA continues to influence how I engage with communities and people today.”

Stephen emphasizes the significance of PBHA’s legacy. He notes how it has helped many people feel seen, heard, and appreciated. His experience illustrates how PBHA not only supports youth in their roles but also empowers them to carry those lessons into their future endeavors.

“It offers youth experiences as counselors that they might not otherwise receive, and it certainly shaped my path in profound ways.”
