On October 26th, 2009, Geoffrey Canada, a renowned social activist and CEO of the Harlem Children’s Zone, delivered the 4th annual Robert Coles “Call of Service” Lecture at Memorial Church. In his speech, Canada emphasized the urgent need for education reform, stating, “Unless we do something radically different... there is no way we will remain the kind of superpower that we are today.”

He advocated for a longer school year and greater accountability for teachers, expressing frustration with existing educational structures. Canada concluded with his poem “Take a Stand”, which emphasized the importance of resilience and active participation in creating positive change within one's community.
