This October, Kerry McGowan, a long-time Director of Programs at PBHA, will celebrate 29 years with the organization. What started as a serendipitous turn of events has blossomed into a long and impactful career. “It was an accident, haha,” he recalls. Kerry’s journey to PBHA began after a stint managing a youth program for a refugee organization in Dorchester, Massachusetts. When that organization faced challenges, a colleague connected him to PBHA, leading to a quick interview process that ultimately landed him the role.

Reflecting on why PBHA has become his home for nearly three decades, Kerry shares, “My average at a job before PBHA was about 3-5 years, so I would have never thought my role here would last this long.” He emphasizes the significance of working directly with passionate undergraduate students dedicated to social justice and community service. “I’ve never hated any of my jobs because I love the people,” he adds, highlighting the joyful and intimate nature of the nonprofit environment.

Over the years, Kerry has witnessed a notable shift in the organizational landscape. “The city has evolved a lot,” he notes, explaining how PBHA has transitioned from a more independent structure to a framework that emphasizes program quality and rigorous training. He recalls how early students innovated and established national programs like Peace Games and Strong Women, Strong Girls.

Outside of work, Kerry has deep roots in Dorchester, a neighborhood he cherishes for its diversity and sense of community. “I just love running into former campers and community participants,” he shares.

For students preparing to volunteer in unfamiliar communities, Kerry offers this advice:

“Do it! Don’t let that stop you. That’s how you learn about new communities and be of service…my Peace Corps experience taught me that I need them more than they need me.” - Kerry McGowan, stressing the importance of entering these spaces with humility, emphasizing that community engagement is a two-way street.
