Story #61: Robert Coles and His Impact on History

Robert Coles is a distinguished figure in social justice and alumnus of PBHA. A prominent child psychiatrist, author, and educator, Coles devoted his career to understanding the lives of children and the profound impact of social environments on their development. His work focuses in the areas of social justice and education, making him a fitting namesake for the annual Robert Coles "Call of Service" lecture and award, whose mission is to honor individuals who embody his spirit of service.

His time at PBHA, where he taught and mentored students, reflected his dedication to engaging young minds in meaningful social work. He encouraged students to step outside the classroom and immerse themselves in the realities of those they aimed to serve, fostering a generation of compassionate leaders who are driven by a commitment to social change.

In his writings, Coles highlighted the stories of children from various backgrounds, emphasizing their resilience and the need for a supportive environment. Coles served as a mentor to former Coles “Call of Service” award recipients, such as Ruby Bridges.
