3 Reasons Being a SUP Director Will Change Your Life
“It makes you work harder than you think you can for things you care about more than you thought you could.”
1. SUP directors make a difference.
Did you know that, according to the National Summer Learning Association, more than half of the opportunity gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities? As a result, low-income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college (Alexander et al, 2007). SUP believes that education is a civil right--that's why this program provides families with an affordable summer camp that supports campers academically while also providing enriching field trips and workshops to ensure the well-rounded summer that every child deserves.
2. You will become part of the SUP family.
For over three decades, "SUP Love" has defined a community that spans generations of students, campers and families who share a powerful common camp experience. In fact, many of our directors were once campers themselves. The enduring connections forged during SUP summers form a SUP family that lasts for years, with alumni and families returning year after year.
3. Being a SUP director transforms you.
Yes, the Summer Urban Program helps youth grow -- in fact, our 11 lively day camps and evening ESL program for immigrant teens will serve more than 800 youth from Boston and Cambridge, providing hours of academic enrichment, field trips, and mentorship. But it also grows its directors and counselors into this generation's public service leaders. SUP directors gain skills in everything from nonprofit management to staff development to public speaking, and our alumni go on to become educators, organizers, nonprofit entrepreneurs, advocates, and more. Are you ready for the hardest summer you'll ever love? "I know the things I learned through SUP I will carry with me to other areas of my life. It will test your patience, your resilience, and your people skills, but you can't help but fall in love with the campers and the community as a result of the hard work that you put into the program."
