And We're Off!

This Wednesday marked the first day of the summer that all twelve of our Summer Urban Program sites were up and running — and they’re off to a great start! The first day of camp always starts with some nerves–and this year, it kicked off with a torrential downpour! However, the rain didn’t dim the smiles of the Mission Hill Summer Program directors and counselors as they waited anxiously at the registration table for the first campers to arrive. Slowly children trickled through the front doors, shaking off umbrellas, wondering who would be in their class and what their new counselor would be like. Families shook hands with the college student and high schooler who would be teaching their child for the next six weeks.Mission Hill Summer Program director Xavier Rivera leads campers in a camp cheer. It didn’t take long before everyone was smiling. Campers from previous summers reunited with old friends and returning counselors.New campers were welcomed warmly by their SC and JC. Only an hour into the first day at Mission Hill Summer Program, campers who had stepped through that front door shy and quiet were laughing as they played games in their classroom and got to know their new class. By lunch time, campers were joining the directors in a loud, camp-wide cheer. “Mish-what?” called one director. “MISSION!” yelled back campers.Across Boston and Cambridge, twelve camps celebrated the beginning of an incredible summer. We can't wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!
