Story #67: Simon Thompson Translates His HSHS Experiences to Civic Advocacy

Simon Thompson’s time at PBHA was more than just an educational experience; it was a transformative journey that gave him a multi-dimensional lens on pressing social issues. In PBHA’s 2023 Alumni Survey, he remarked:

“PBHA gave me a more multi-dimensional lens of the challenging public policy issues that elected leaders and civil servants face.”

Through hands-on work, Simon delved into the complexities of homelessness, underfunded schools, and the importance of robust planning over reactionary solutions.

His role as a staff member at the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS) was particularly impactful. The lessons he learned there—about empathy, understanding, and the nuances of public policy—remain with him to this day. He shared:

“Being a staff member at HSHS was my most grounding experience at Harvard…even in the most well-funded and progressive municipalities, there are still major public policy problems where nonprofit and private entities unfortunately must fill gaps.”

Building Lifelong Connections

For Simon, PBHA was not only a platform for learning; it was where he found his community.

“PBHA programs are where I found my people and my lifelong friends, far more than through academics or other extracurriculars.”

This sense of belonging was vital in navigating the challenges of student life and beyond. Furthermore, his experiences also helped him confront privilege and comfort, giving him a clearer view of societal issues. These skills have undoubtedly shaped his career trajectory, equipping him for the various roles he has undertaken.

“I learned Conflict resolution skills. At HSHS, I learned so much about communication and defusing challenging situations, and those lessons are forever embedded in me.”

A Career in Civic Leadership

Today, Simon serves as the Managing Director of Civics for Blue Haven Initiative, where he leads strategy and partnership building for the family office’s Civics portfolio. Under his leadership, Blue Haven Civics focuses on three core areas: Inspiring Innovation, Improving Markets, and Strengthening Democracy. Simon first joined Blue Haven in 2014, helping to build the Civics team, and after a brief hiatus, he returned to advance its mission, becoming Managing Director of Civics in 2024. Most recently, he spearheaded a statewide grant-making program focused on economic security and democracy policies.

Simon’s journey reflects the spirit of PBHA—transformative experiences, lasting friendships, and a deep commitment to making a difference in the world. His story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that engagement and community service can have, not just on individuals, but on society as a whole.
