Story #52: Ruby Bridges on Courage and Compassion

“Every one of our babies comes into the world with a clean heart” - Ruby Bridges, 2023

On November 9th, 2023, Ruby Bridges, the American civil rights activist, received the Robert Coles Call of Service Award at Harvard Memorial Church, honoring her lifelong commitment to education and tolerance. At just six years old, Bridges became the first Black child to integrate a New Orleans school, facing hostility but finding support in her psychiatrist, Dr. Robert Coles, after whom the award is named.

In her speech, Bridges reflected on her journey and the importance of teaching young people about compassion and understanding. “Every one of our babies comes into the world with a clean heart,” she emphasized, urging adults to break the cycle of racism passed to the next generation. Bridges also addressed the current challenges surrounding book bans that target her children’s book. She advocated for diverse representation in educational materials, underscoring the need for all voices to be heard in the classroom. During her visit, she engaged with elementary students from PBHA’s programs, encouraging them to dream big and remain hopeful. “Things are going to be OK,” she assured them, echoing the resilience that defines her remarkable legacy.
