Story #72: Maura Healey, CHANCE Alum, Becomes Governor of Massachusetts

Maura Healey’s journey from PBHA to the Governor's Office of Massachusetts exemplifies the transformative power of community engagement and the importance of representation. As a participant in PBHA's CHANCE (College High-school Alliance: A Nexus for Creative Education) program, Healey played a pivotal role in supporting local high school students, providing them with the motivation and resources needed to pursue higher education. Through her involvement in CHANCE, Maura not only helped students navigate the complexities of college admissions but also inspired them to embrace their identities and aspirations.

A Career in Government

After her time at PBHA, Healey’s career flourished. In 2014, she became elected as Attorney General of Massachusetts, where she championed initiatives focused on consumer protection, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. Notably, she led efforts to address the opioid crisis, implement comprehensive data privacy laws, and advocate for reproductive rights, solidifying her reputation as a bold and effective leader.

In November 2022, Healey made history again by becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected as Governor of Massachusetts.
