Story #94: Steph Gunderson, HSHS Alum and Cancer Nurse

Steph Gunderson ‘99’s journey from a trader on Wall Street to a compassionate cancer nurse reflects both her personal growth and the deep values instilled in her through her work with PBHA. While at Harvard, Steph volunteered at the PBHA’s Uni-Lu homeless shelter—now the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter (HSHS)—and it was an experience that profoundly shaped her worldview. It was here that she witnessed firsthand the complex challenges of homelessness and mental illness, and she developed a deep empathy for those facing adversity. As she explained in PBHA 2023 Alumni Survey:

"I learned from working in the PBHA homeless shelter that a spiral downward can happen to anyone.” - Steph Gunderson

This discovery reinforced her belief in the importance of community support and social justice. These formative experiences with PBHA helped her become not only a dedicated advocate for others but also a nurse who listens without judgment, meeting each patient where they are, regardless of their background or circumstances.

In her healthcare career, Gunderson has worked tirelessly to support and empower her patients, using the lessons she learned through PBHA to guide her practice.

"I think I've seen how a few people can make a difference. I've learned to stand up for my principles, even if I'm just one person taking a stand. I've advocated for hundreds of patients in my career. I learned to listen and gather info before leaping to conclusions." - Steph Gunderson

Gunderson highlights the impact that one person can have, especially when they stand up for what is right. Her years of advocacy on behalf of many patients reflect her commitment to making healthcare more accessible and compassionate. Whether she’s comforting a patient who feels embarrassed or advocating for better care, Gunderson draws on the empathy and non-judgmental approach she cultivated at PBHA. Her path serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of service and the lasting influence that PBHA can have on its volunteers, and we are so proud of Gunderson for embracing these values in her healthcare career.
